Ohio Packing Co., based in Columbus, Ohio, is closing its doors and selling its brands and business to Blue Grass Quality Meats of Covington, Ky., according to a message posted at the Ohio Packing website URL.

“Ohio Packing Company would like to thank you for your business over the years. We have decided to close our Columbus, OH operations,” the website message said, signed by the owners, the Wilke family. It did not give an explanation for the abrupt closure.

Ohio Packing’s Harvest, Family and Serv-Mor brands, as well as its private label business is in the process of being “transitioned” to Blue Grass Quality Meats. The note indicated that the transactions were expected to be completed by April 14, 2014.

Founded in 1907 as a slaughterhouse, Ohio Packing’s products more recently included further processed smoked pork, primarily ham and bacon items, and fresh and smoked sausage products, according to the company’s LinkedIn site, including the OSU fan favorite Buckeye Hot Dogs. The company employed somewhere over 100 workers, according to estimates.
